How important it is to be spiritual? The wellness of every human being is decided by mental, physical and emotional well being. Most people take care of the mental and physical part by working on their mind and body. They solve tough problems, and do rigorous exercises. What most fail to take care of is their emotional wellness, which can cause same amount of, or even more damage than the physical and mental ailments. In most cases, a damaged emotional health can transform into psychosomatic, and mental health issues. Hence in no way, we can afford to ignore the emotional well being.
How do you take care of your emotional health? This is not rocket science. You need to provide food to your soul, as you provide food to your body. The simplest thing that one can do is to pray on a regular basis. Set aside a time for that. Rituals and mantras also help, but if you are not aware of any rituals, then a simple prayer, in any form, where you remember the higher self can help. Religion and temples, mosques, churches, and gurudwaras, are meant to keep your spiritual side alive and kicking.
Being spiritual and religious does not mean that you renounce wealth, and the good life. In fact, it aids you in performing at these aspects better. If you choose to completely ignore your spiritual needs, then you are doing it at the cost of hurting your own psyche. All this has deeper psychological impacts, and is very scientific. You may be a non-believer, but you still like a soothing music, and a good read, which is nothing, but the food for your soul. So are prayers. You are not bowing in front of anybody when you pray, but you are just fulfilling the need of your soul.
How much time is enough? I would say, just 10-15 minutes, or even 5 minutes of prayer is enough to keep the needs of your soul fulfilled. I do not think that is too much for the asking for the amount of returns it gives. Even if you are a hard-nosed businessman, a busy executive, or a busy politician, it will assist you in being healthy, and meeting your targets better. Any help is a help, and a little prayer a day, aids you in multiple ways. If you have never tried, it is a good time to try and see for yourself. It gives you a lot of inner strength to meet the challenges in today’s tough life.
Nobody knows for sure if God is there or not. We can only feel the presence, and if we are lucky enough, we may feel that presence even more strongly. It just takes a little prayer a day.
